TOOWOOMBA– A man in eastern Australia says he came across an unidentified creature that looked like “a mix between a dingo and a fox”.
The 44-year-old Toowoomba resident, a known radio personality who provided a full name and contact information but asked to be kept anonymous, told Cryptozoology News on Wednesday that he saw the unusual animal while on his way to his town on March 9.
“I was driving from HIghfields to Toowoomba,” he said. “It was 3.30 a.m.,” the radio host added.
The driver explained that the sighting lasted only 2 seconds but that he was able to see what the animal looked like.
“It ran in front of my car. It had a fox head, tall dog-like body like a greyhound and a fox tale.”
He says there have been other sightings and that eyewitnesses are referring to it as the Fingo, a “mix between a dingo and a fox”.
Canid hybrids often take place in the wild, between domestic or feral dogs and wild canis. The dog genus Canis, which includes members such as gray wolves, dingoes, coyotes and domestic dogs, purportedly can not interbreed with members of the Canidae, such as foxes. Biologists believe that even if they were able to mix their genes, the resulting offspring would be infertile. Members of the genus Canis, except for the black-jacked jackal and the side-striped jackal, can however interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Toowoomba, the sixth largest city in Queensland, has a population of 114,000 making it the second most populated inland city after Canberra.
