Lets say that we're in a very balanced area where the regular voters go 40% republican and 40% democrat 5% are third partys, and 5% can vary 50% of the eligable population votes regurally. Now, to swing the election what we have to do is to get some of that 50% who normally would not cast a ballot to do so, and for more of them to vote for whoever we want to win than vote for the other. So lets say we want the republican to win. What we do is make the evangelical christians feel threatened (introduce the gay marrige issue) They are a larger population than are gays, so that is going to get more votes for our guy than against him. Lets say that gets 1% of the vote against him, and 2% for him. Now, just to be sure, we pressure the democrat to introduce some environmental legislation that would shut down a factory that employs a large number of people in our district. That gets people out alright, and scores the 1% of people who'se primary decision criteria is environmentalism for the democrat. However it scores the 5% of people who do not want to see the economy ruined for the republican.
Re: Election rigged? Nah ;) Yes, however this always happens, and generally benifits both sides. Not all of the pre recorded votes on the machines were for bush, and it seemed that in each individual case they seemed to favor the party that was dominent in the area. We've never had a totally clean election, and probably never will, but the cheating does and did in this election tend to balance out. It does not constitute a nationwide conspiracy. The example of christian fundimentalists was only one of the groups that were activated for this election. It is the people who normally do not vote who swing these things. Here is how I think this works. In any given area, the people who vote in every election tend to vote for the same party every time. Our guy soars in by 6% and does what we tell him beacause he is up for election again in a few years. I'm not ripping on you K@t, I just think we're focusing on the issue of direct cheating and opposition between right and left, while ignoring the more insidious ways that these things actually turn.
