Death couldn't be too bad. Practically everybody has already done it.[/b]

Almost everybody. New Souls do stick out like a smashed thumb.

REINCARNATION:

Time travelers from the future rescue our DNA at the time of our passing, clean it up and remove the deterioration markers that age us and prepare a 22 year old cloned body for us.

Then they rescue a complete imprint from our brain's electronic storage facility and transport it over to our new bodies. Instant reincarnation.

Hey, it could happen.

Even linear scientific progress over millions of years of human existence could produce a science at this level. However, our progress is exponetial, geometric and moving god awful fast.

You guys will live to see breathtaking progress. My dad was born in 1899 and saw the automobile revolution, the entire history of flight and passed away believing that the sun rotated around the earth each day.

I saw the space age dawn and the computer revolution. Aren't you amazed every time you use your instant message system? Of course not. Its a matter of course. We have come to rely on and expect instant communication. Cell phones are very Dick Tracy. And they are not the least amazing to us any more.

Some day, one or two of you will go in for your regular rejuvination treatment and consider it a matter of course. Old age will become a thing of the past and dreaded as much as small pox or AIDS.

Hang in there. Kurzweil says that if we can make it for 20 more years, science will give us an additional 20 healthy years. If we make it through those 20 science will give us another 40.

So stay healthy, watch what you eat. Stop at one Apple Martini or one glass of wine. Eat lots of oatmeal by adding it to foods you like. I put a scoop in spaghetti sauce when I make it from scratch. It thickens nicely. I also make a fantastic oatmeal pancake recipe that includes a scoop of protein powder. Cayenne pepper and cumin spice (curry spice) also add to your thinking ability.

If I make it another 20 years I'll be 84. Jack LaLane is about that age so it can be done. A friend of mine is 90 and comes down to the local pub with us for a martini every day or so. His quality of life is excellent.

So don't assume that getting old is so horrible. Paul

aimswanson,

Thanks for the tips for longevity. I remember a few years ago when they interviewed a Russian man that hit 105. His recomendation was a few glasses of Vodka every day with strong tobacco, potatos & cabbage. He was somewhat vague as to the order.

First major downside to all those people living 20 more years is that eventually the sea will give out unless they make some serious strides in fishing management yesterday.

Jalapeno, tomato, broccoli, gin or vodka, bananas, steak; no smoking or milk. I guarantee you'll live to be 100+, and, if you don't, I want you to come see me and I'll personally get to the bottom of it.

Let's see, you'll be the guy that looks more convincing than the other dude St. Peter, with a little kiosk beside the pearly gates right?. I can just see the confusion when I ask to see St. Paul.......

You want the backstage pass, I know a guy who knows a guy.[/b]

Can we get a meeting with the guy that set off that M-10,000,000,000,000 in the beginning? He should have been around when the first word was spoken. I'd really like to know what that first word was.

Sometimes I get the suspicion it was "DUCK!!!!!!!!!" just before thta really large explosion.

It was "duck," yes.

Then he went around the rest of the parallel universes patting them on the heads saying "duck" until he got to the one he had the crush on, and said "goose."

Let me guess, this was the one from our time line that laid the golden eggs which led of course to discovering magic beans, magic bean stalks, talking harps, a short tailor that looks just like a rodent on steroids who killed seven with one blow, a castle in the sky, the Grand Canyon when the giant fell down and went boom.

Re: Future Humans Visit At Time Of Death

aimswanson, this is an excellent topic you have started. I have already responded from my gut. Now I have given it some thought. Your prediction allows us to explore who and what we are.

I do hope your prediction does not come true; your prediction hails the end of our species. For example, one of the benefits of your future "immortality system" is that,

"Our future life will be endless and thus we can patiently and gradually grow in knowledge."

And this would pretty much stifle who we are. Take three individuals who have made great strides for our species. I won't lead you. Take your pick. Now tell them they have "forever" on this planet rather than a few decades. Do they still have the same fire in the belly?

For the past 30,000 years we have done amazing things because we do not have much time. Our certain deaths make us build pyramids, build better republics, finish that book, stay up late to test it one more time, and hold our wives and children tightly.

Your prediction, I think, betrays a common problem with our society. We believe death and old age are the problem. They are not the problem; they are the motivation. Remember that The Renaissance was populated with thinkers who would place a human skull on their desks. This reminder urged them to do better, be more diligent, complete the task at hand. But today we expect that Pfizer will figure out a way to let us watch television for a few more decades. We don't like to think about the end and what that means for us now.

If your prediction comes true, I would elect to remain with the time-limited humans. I predict the individuals on the time-limited team will be the real go-getters.

We are born, for a period of time we struggle with ourselves and our environment, and at some point we die. Enjoy the struggle while you have it.

When I was very young, I read a copy of Emerson. His ideas spread through my mind like a cancer. When I reflected on my young adulthood, until just a few years ago, I saw this as a terrible mistake. I read him with no guidance and with limited understanding. His ideas on life--and living one's life--made me a bit less than popular with my age group. But a few years ago, one morning, I realized how full my life had been up to that point--full of love and experience. It was the old "If I were to die right now, I could not complain" moment. I have a long-dead author to thank for this gift.

Under your system, Ralph Waldo would be in his 4th 22 year-old body today. There he is taking a break from surfing and passively talking to his 128th girlfriend on a beach in southern California. They are not talking about important things because they have, well, they have forever. She tells him, "You know, some day you should write down some of those old thoughts you had--I think they have value."

"I will some day", he says, "I have plenty of time."
