The distillation of water is the only way to remove radioactive isotopes such as Cesium, Strontium and Iodine. Below are the proper methods for distilling water.
Our friend "John" mentioned that we would all have to learn how to purify water in the future due to the radioactive dust that would settle into the soil, polluting all ground water. Above is an example of a solar H2O still made out of a water proof box and a slanted piece of glass with a water catch drain at the base of the glass.
A more classical design of a still should be used in cold weather climates, and can also be used to produce ethanol, for fuel purposes, from a week old mash made of fruit or some other sweet products that yeast can consume. Ethanol should never be consumed as it is bad for you and the first 5% of distillate, the "head", will be methanol, which will blind and ultimately kill you. Ethanol can safely be used as fuel in many cars and the Brazilians use a blend of 95% ethanol to gas, E95, as their primary fuel.
Good quality air filters are necessary to avoid breathing radioactive isotope dust into your lungs immediately after detonation of nuclear warheads and breach of nuclear power plants, example: Fukushima, Japan; Chernobyl, Ukraine; 3 mile island, Pennsylvania. Please be sure to cover as much of your body as possible, including your face and eyes, and to wash yourself and clothing as often as possible. Radioactive dust is easily washed away with soap and water. The most important thing anyone can do immediately after a nuclear disaster is to seek shelter as the majority of the dust and surface radiation will dissipate in the first week. The longer someone can stay hidden away from the dangers of radiation, the less they will suffer from the effects of it.
The amount of radioactive waste released from a nuclear power plant is much greater than the release from a warhead. The release is also constant, rendering the immediate area around the power plant uninhabitable indefinitely. Please evacuate your immediate area if your local nuclear power facility is breached. A safe distance is roughly 100 miles, depending on whether or not you are downwind of the facility.
Several areas within the US are already suffering from radiation poisoning, Rockledge, CO, 11 miles outside of Denver is probably the worst case of such danger, due to the production of plutonium warheads during the cold war. I believe a common reading for that area is over 100 CPM, while safe areas are closer to 10 CPM. Please note that the nuclear testing sites of the state of Nevada, the power plant site of 3 mile island Pennsylvania, and the plutonium production facility at Hanford, Washington are also likely to produce high radiation counts.
Today in the news a story was covered about the husband of Gabrielle Giffords, astronaut and space shuttle captain Mark Kelly, showing everyone how easy it was to purchase an AR15 rifle. He made his purchase from Diamondback Police Supply, likely a Diamondback Firearms manufactured rifle..........aka Taurus Firearms
