Okay, this is the thread for christmasy things. Favorite Carols, all the way to decorations.

I'll kick it off with the "history" behind the 12 days of Christmas:

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (MORE EDUCATION)

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the
world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the
partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with
Christmas? Today I found out, thanks to the Internet. From 1558 until
1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their
faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism
song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface
meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.
Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which
the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of
the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy
Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution,
Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy,
Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self
Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief >in
the Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with >me
and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that
strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish.

more of the 12 days of chrismas

The 12-daily joeltime

All Indo-European peoples celebrate people around the wintersolstitium a large celebration that usually a number summon lasted. These furrow could summon or after the solstitium fall or partly for it and partly after it. The Germanic Joelfeest lasted twelve days, that were bred originally from the first full moon after the solstitium. After the Juliaanse calendar were imported went the Germen to it over the joeltijd in the twelve days after the solstitium to celebrate. As deep been rooted sat this saint celebration that attempts of ecclesiastic side it to prohibit or to enfeeble never totally succeeded be. Still in parts of Scandinavia, a 12-daily Joelfeest is celebrated. Still becomes the period of 26 December until 6 January in North-Germany Zw?lften named, while one more to the south yet. speaks of Zw?lf Night or Zw?lf saint Harnessed.

In the Netherlands, the joeltijd was indicated also well as a De Twaalf dagen. In England, the name Twelve Days had been closed customary, on 6 January with Twellth Night. Usually 26 December was bred as first day after christmas' and the joeltijd ended then on 6 january as 'twelfth day after christmas'. Someone else manner was to be counted Christmas self also with and then the joeltijd ended on 6 January with Dertiendag. This name is been till in the twentieth century in our country general accepted. In Westfalen, the joeltijd was indicated Summon as a Dr?ttien.

It's bad english because I put it in the translation machine.

Also the chrismas tree came from the old germanic believe.
