Those sea demons were called "Sirens" and were supposed to be beautiful women who sang songs to passing ships, and the ships crews were hypnotised into trying to locate the voices and were lured into rocks that smashed up their ships!!....Below is a real photo of a "Siren" ..

Mermaids entered pop culture and other things out of a legend
and some say it was a conspiracy to turn something evil into something
