When it's necessary, I hope I can get across emotions, moods, reactions, and so forth with words rather than smileys. A lot of the time it's not necessary, because what I'm writing about may have nothing to do with what mood I'm in.
I do want to clarify something though: When I say that I hate smileys or abbreviated text, it's not that I hate it when others do it - only when I do. To me it's kind of like spelling or grammatical errors. I try to avoid them if possible (at least the spelling ones), but if I see someone else's post contains a lot of them, it doesn't really bother me too much - as long as I can get the gist of what they are saying.
