Do you HAVE to hold them? (wondering)
No because there's an air gap between the user and the pendulum, as in a capacitor. In essence, what the diviner is doing, is communicating with the pendulum's capacity and getting connective feedback from whatever device is suspended at the end of that string.

Does any material do? Or are there materials better than others?

For instance, would a pendulum made out of gold, be better than a crystal? Is a string better than a chain?

Num... IMHO, the best way to figure out a pendulum is by the handling of one.
I frequent a shop that sells them and have watched many hold the various pendulums
in their palms with their eyes shut to see if they can 'feel the vibrations'...To see if there is a good fit for themselves.

I know people whom take this stuff very seriously and for them, it apparently works...Never questioned it.

Same with the chain or cord you would hang it from,
it would be whatever you would personally favor to make it your very own.

It can be a very highly personal endeavor for some.

Just sharing some of my thoughts.

:)

Okay, I understand what you're saying here. And it makes sense. It's more about what suits you best, than it is about the "best" materials in theory.

It's cool that you have such a shop near where you are.
