Asmodeus is one of the seven Princes of Hell, associated strongly with the sin of Lust. He appears as an antagonist in the Book of Tobit and in several Talmudic legends, which pit him against the king and divine sorcerer Solomon. He is known in Islamic lore as the King of the Jinn. Christians in the Renaissance considered him to be a King of the Nine Hells. Asmodeus commands 72 legions of demons, and is said to be subject to either Satan or the Jinnestan Emperor, Amoymon. Asmodeus is listed as the 32nd spirit in the Ars Goetia.

Asmodeus also appears in the following grimoires: The Lesser Key of Solomon, (including Thomas Rudd’s version), Michael Ford’s Luciferian Goetia, Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, S. Connolly’s Daemonolatry Goetia, Jacques Collin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal and Macgregor Mathers’s Book of Abramelin.

Asmodeus doesn’t appear in the Bible, but can be found in several other Abrahamic texts. He also appears in the Testament of Solomon and the Malleus Maleficarum.

Description

Asmodeus most commonly takes the form of a tall, well-dressed man with pointed ears, a beaky nose, a mouth that spits fire, and two extra heads flanking his human one: one of a ram, and one of a bull. His legs are covered in bright feathers and have rooster-like or waterfowl-like feet, and he has the tail of a serpent or dragon. He rides a lion with the neck, tail and wings of a dragon.

He can take the form of a handsome, well-dressed man, but still must conceal one of his legs, which remains untransformed, feathery and bird-footed. He may also keep his tail as well. He walks with one or two canes in this form, as his bird foot causes him to walk with a pronounced limp. He can also appear as a black dog.

Commentary

Appropriate for a powerful, ancient spirit associated with lust, Asmodeus gets around, in more ways than one. He first appeared as a judge of humanity in Babylon, working for the gods, who determined whether humans could advance past their mortal state or had to be reborn again. Pazuzu, a much wickeder god, corrupted him by manipulating him into judging humanity more and more harshly, so that eventually few to no humans could pass his strict requirements and advance.

In early Jewish myth he is the demonic suitor of Sarah, and has to be driven away after killing her first seven husbands. He later becomes the legendary foe and temporary conqueror of Solomon, who eventually returns, overcomes and binds him after losing his kingdom and identity to the demon.

In Zoroastrian myth he was a servant of Ahriman, known for his lust and fury. In Islamic myth, he is considered the ruler of the Djinn. Renaissance Christians called him the King of the Nine Hells. He is also depicted as the third husband of Lilith, and was blamed for the possession of the Nuns of Loudun in the 17th century.

His depictions range from elegant, charismatic, good-humored and persuasive to ferocious, bad-tempered and obsessed with carnal appetites, violence and revenge. Brilliant, powerful and very skilled, he is often called upon by magicians, but is also legendary for his revenge on those who do not treat him with the proper caution and respect.

Powers and Abilities

As the King of Lust, he is credited with the ability to break up marriages, make people infertile or impotent, twist people’s desires, and tempt men into infidelity.

He is also the overseer of Hell’s gambling houses, and tempts people to gamble, eventually causing them to fall to gambling addiction. He has an especial interest in revenge, and gleefully aids those who call on him for this purpose. Asmodeus is also associated with many possessions, including group possessions.

Due to his tremendous knowledge and talents, he can answer many question if compelled to do so. Those also include instruction in all handcrafts including stonemasonry and pottery, as well as math, engineering and astronomy.

He can locate treasures and reveal secrets, and also teaches invisibility. He can change his shape and that of others, produce a feast out of thin air, and transmute metals. He can gift magical rings to his followers, including one called the Ring of Virtues, and others that are influenced by different heavenly bodies. He has foreknowledge of humans’ fates as well.

Asmodeus in Grimoires:

Original text from the Lesser Key of Solomon by MacGregor Mathers:

(32.) ASMODAY. – The Thirty-second Spirit is Asmoday, or Asmodai. He is a Great King, Strong, and Powerful. He appeareth with Three Heads, whereof the first is like a Bull, the second like a Man, and the third like a Ram; he hath also the tail of a Serpent, and from his mouth issue Flames of Fire. His Feet are webbed like those of a Goose. He sitteth upon an Infernal Dragon, and beareth in his hand a Lance with a Banner. He is first and choicest under the Power of A MAYMON , he goeth before all other. When the Exorcist hath a mind to call him, let it be abroad, and let him stand on his feet all the time of action, with his Cap or Headdress off; for if it be on, A MAYMON will deceive him and call all his actions to be bewrayed. But as soon as the Exorcist seeth Asmoday in the shape aforesaid, he shall call him by his Name, saying: “Art thou Asmoday?” and he will not deny it, and by-and-by he will bow down unto the ground. He giveth the Ring of Virtues; he teacheth the Arts of Arithmetic, Astronomy, Geometry, and all handicrafts absolutely. He giveth true and full answers unto thy demands. He maketh one Invincible. He showeth the place where Treasures lie, and guardeth it. He, amongst the Legions of AMAYMON governeth 72 Legions of Spirits Inferior. His Seal is this which thou must wear as a Lamen upon thy breast, etc.

From Tikaboo

“Asmoday (a.k.a. Asmodeus or Asmodai) is a Great King, Strong, and Powerful. He is first and choicest under the Power of AMAYMON, he goeth before all other. When the Exorcist hath a mind to call him, let it be abroad, and let him stand on his feet all the time of action, with his Cap or Headdress off; for if it be on, AMAYMON will deceive him and call all his actions to be bewrayed. But as soon as the Exorcist seeth Asmoday in the shape aforesaid, he shall call him by his Name, saying: ?Art thou Asmoday?? and he will not deny it, and by-and-by he will bow down unto the ground. His Seal is worn as a Lamen upon thy breast.”

From the Luciferian Goetia by Michael Ford

“Asmodai also inspires invincibility by the development of strength and will. As one evokes Asmoday, a seeming cloud of black and gray smoke appears in the mirror – it seems to move beyond the mirror from the circle yet this is a seeming illusion – if ones concentration of Will is upon the circle, hold it fast to the meeting place of spirits. Asmoday may be summoned by self-enchantment as in Karezza (Karezza is masturbation without climax, always Willed) or other means. A Sex Magickal operation involving the consecration of his Sigil with secretions/fluids of both male and female will create Asmoday, as suggested rightly so by Aleister Crowley. Qabalistic lore has long warned of such, as it is said to breed demons. In a self-initiatory sense, it is ideal and powerful.”

From the Daemonolatry Goetia by S. Connolly

“Some believe Asmoday is one of the three heads (The others being Amaymon and Amducius) in the Asmodai image in Colin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal. Some believe Asmoday is equal to Asmodeus, a daemon of lust and passion. Asmoday can be worked with to make the maigician physically stronger and mentally sharp.”

From the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, by Johann Weyer

[35] Sidonay [*Sydonay], alias Asmoday, a great king, strong and mightie, he is seene with three heads, whereof the first is like a bull, the second like a man, the third like a ram, he hath a serpents taile, he belcheth flames out of his mouth, he hath feete like a goose, he sitteth on an infernall dragon, he carrieth a lance and a flag in his hand, he goeth before others, which are under the power of Amaymon. When the conjuror exerciseth this office, let him be abroad [*brave],6 let him be warie [=courageous] and standing on his feete; <if his cap be on his head> [! *if he is afraid he will be overwhelmed],7 he will cause all his dooings to be bewraied [=divulged], which if he doo not, the exorcist shalbe deceived by Amaymon in everie thing. But so soone as he seeth him in the forme aforesaid, he shall call him by his name, saieng; Thou art Asmoday; he will not denie it, and by and by he boweth downe to the ground; he giveth the ring of vertues, he absolutelie teacheth geometrie, arythmetike, astronomie, and handicrafts [=mechanics or engineering]. To all demands he answereth fullie and trulie, he maketh a man invisible, he sheweth the places where treasure lieth, and gardeth it, if it be among the legions of Amaymon, he hath under his power seventie two legions.

From the Book of Abramelin by MacGregor Mathers

Asmodee: Usually written “Asmodeus,” and sometimes “Chashmodai”. Derived by some from the Hebrew word “Asamod,” to destroy or exterminate; and by others from the Persian verb “Azmonden,” = to tempt, to try or prove. Some Rabbins say that Asmodeus was the child of the incest of Tubal-Cain and his sister Naafrfah. Others say that he was the Demon of impurity. Others again relate that he was employed by Solomon in the building of the Temple at Jerusalem; that he then attempted to dethrone Solomon, to put himself in his place; but that the King vanquished him and the Angel Gabriel chased him into Egypt, and there bound him in a Grotto. The Rabbins say that when Asmodeus was working at the building of the Temple, he made use of no metal tool; but instead of a certain stone which cut ordinary stone as a diamond will glass.

Asmodeus Summoning Ritual

As is clear from the many textual sources and experiences of both magicians and laymen, Asmodeus has many powers that can make summoning him a worthy endeavor.

I’ve already shared an Asmodeus summoning ritual that isn’t overly complicated and can be attempted by beginners. There is also my premium ritual service if you want me to summon Asmodeus for you. I have vast experience and success with summoning demonic entities for myself and for my clients. This is the best option if you’re a beginner and want to get faster results with demonic magic.

It’s very important that you have a worthy reason for summoning Asmodeus in order to prevent any backlash. He is typically summoned for lust and attraction and he is most willing to help in these situations. For example, if a person wants to become more attractive, to fulfill their lustful desires or to provoke them in others.
