Question for science people here.
What causes positive and negative electric charge? How about north and south of a magnet?

Does a physicist anywhere have an idea? One of those things taken for granted.

Since Tesla utilized both in the form of high voltage and high currents I think we should get a more fundamental understanding of the source charges.

For example, why aren't there a 100 different electric charges instead of just 2?

Charge is one of the basic forces. Apparently it is believed that the cause of charge was the creation event that created the universe. Same goes for the magnetic field. Also goes without saying for the weight and time fields. All of this occurs in 3D space. No one has come forth yet to declare length itself as a basic force. Yet there are empirical observations that would suggest so. All of the basic forces are assembled in a manner so as to never allow for self annihilation. So any one force approaching its zero point will co-vary with other forces that move away from their zero points.

Only two types of charge are needed to create a zero point. Same goes without saying for all the other basic forces.

We do have a very good understanding of how to manipulate charge. But only on one spatial plane. I came across some experimental information recently that shows there are three independent spin states for the electron. So accessing the other two spin states will yield some knowledge that is not presently known.

If you want to think of it in terms of particles, positive charge is caused by a particle (in this case a fermion) having a particular set of quarks (which are fundamental particles - in current theory) in its makeup. For protons, it's two up quarks and one down quark.

Negative charge is a quantum property of the electron, an elementary particle (in current thinking) that is not composed of quarks.

There are 6 kinds of quarks - called "flavors" of quarks. You can read a decent summary of this quark stuff (it's called quantum chromodynamics, IIRC) here.

positrons are fundamental.
my question is....what is positive and negative?

don't fucking patronize me with elementary school physics.
Answer the goddamn question.

so what's the difference between the vector direction of positive and negative charge?

try to assume i understand charges attract and repel and don't be a patronizing jerk when answering.

My reply wasn't meant to offend you. It seems as if you already know the answers. So I'm not understanding why you would ask for the answer to something you already know. Please enlighten me.

Nobody is being a jerk except you.
You asked, I answered.

The interaction of charges can be described by force vectors. There are positive and negative force vectors, but a single charge of either type can't be described with vectors, though the field around it can.
Since you know about vectors, you should answer your own question.

If you care to know more, find out for yourself. Don't ask about it then take some idiotic attitude.

That's all you're getting out of me. Why should anyone respond to you?

Seeing as this was put in the "time-travel discussion" and included the name of Tesla, iam thinking that with his knowledge of coils and creating very large amounts of electricity, we are assuming that Tesla actually created some form of time-machine?...

Personally i dont think he did...perhaps in later years specialised types of Tesla coils were used as a "part" of some time machine, and i believe that some of his esoteric smaller coils were used in complex radio receivers of the day which were capable of tuning through time.

Tesla was working for the American National Radio Company in the 1930s, using the name of Turbo (taken from his mothers maiden name) and helped develope the HRO short wave receiver which was years in advancement of any other receiver of the day, and the highly over-engineered radio receiver, the FRR-24 which allegedly was used in the Philadelphia Experiment both on board the ship and offshore in the control room..

Going back to the HRO radio, it was unique in that it had separate coils for each individual wave band it covered, and there was a suggestion that Tesla made a special coil set and changed some of the radios electronic circuitry for a few of the receivers, but for what reason i do not know..
