reunion enigma

Here is the reunion enigma. Réunion is a French island near Madagascar that is in the southern hemisphere, but a flight from LAX - Los Angeles, California direct to reunion takes you up to Greenland? This to me... makes zero sense. Does any one care to comment why this is.

Then it is not taking you straight through. Have you asked the airline why? Are some people getting off in Greenland?
