Unfortunately for us, this isn't CSI: Miami. Perhaps somewhere, someone has some kind of algorithmic filter that would let you get some more detail out of the photo, but let's be realistic - Short of speculating or entertaining ourselves with devil's advocate discussions, the most logical and grounded answer is going to be the best.

I wasn't referring to a method to get more detail out of the photo, but instead based on the blur you can determine whether it's near or far.

Digital cameras have a automatic defocus function that defocuses (blurs) objects that are closer to create depth when the focus is further away. There is a way to gauge distance based on the diameter of the blur.

I think it's something either on the windshield or the lens. At that distance (if it was in the distance), speed is also visually perceived slower, so it's much more likely the ufo would be in focus, even at high speeds.

Although it could be a ufo moving really fast up around where the car is ahead.
