Wire gauge for devices like HDRs and Flux Caps

Quick question to anyone who has experience building devices like the HDR or Flux Capacitor. Or any other small devices or projects, really.

What gauge of wires are you using? Is it 14?

21 usually seems about right for general stuff, including the electromagnet winding.

14 is larger than you need in almost all cases, so it will probably just cost more.
It will also make it harder to make the right number of turns in your coils without overlapping.

Why not make the coil former longer to prevent the overlapping of 14awg? ;)
