When I first started meditation a few years back I found it nearly impossible to 'still' (as you say)my thoughts but now I can get down to the required levels within moments.

I think the trick is not silencing the thoughts but allowing them to have no effect over you, just like water flowing over a stone statue. The thoughts still come but they little or no consequence on your state of mind.

My mind is constantly going until I fall asleep. If I am listening or watching something...I think of something else. I do light construction work so I am always thinking step by step what I am doing next. The only break I get from this is my once a week beer with classic rock...then I can relax. I'm not much on meditating as I'm restless and impatient...ha

I must say, but not surprised at the lack of involvement.
I will not judge each to his own.
Interesting a young person i just asked under 21,
    " i don't think i ever have thought nothing"
Walked away glued to the I phone, as if that had the answers!

And that reply is most probably why i started this poll.

It depends upon the practice. More trained person will probably experience this before 3 minutes, unlike others. But of course, other factors applies, nutritional status, breathing principle expertise or pranayama. And most of all faith.
