Number 1 answer is partly correct. You really don't need any instruments to accomplish this. I'm no astrophysicist but all you really would need is time. Once the Sun enters it's Red Giant stage of existence, our current gravitational orbit would put literally put us on the surface of the Sun.

All of those are so complicated, why not just drill a hole to the center of the earth and drop a bomb in it, geeez.
