Umm... it wasn't "directed". An alien starship was surveying our early planets and emptied their septic tank before going to FTL to the next star system.

i'm honestly not sure if "we are the aliens" but if aliens exist we are
probably all tinkered with genetically to a degree making us human alien hybrids.

Either that or there are no actual "aliens" and we have been the aliens all along,
building and utilizing the UFO's.
