Yes, definitely clothes and cars, but a newspaper would nail it on the head, at least if the printing press has been invented. hehe

If you're using a time machine or some other kind of time travel device, you should be able to know what year in the past you're going to, or at least figure out what year you go to by the current year and exactly how many years in the past you want to travel back in time to.

Clothes, cars and technology all define a time period. But like Classical said, if you are using a time machine, you should be able to know what year you're going to.
