It's for the electromagnet. When me and my Papa built our version of the HDR, we felt it was safer to operate a 9v battery for it instead of 120v to avoid possible electrocution.

The schematic for my version of the HDR has been updated. It includes labelling for the banana plugs, guitar cord (part of the time coil), soft iron rod (for the electromagnet), caduceus coil, and 21 gauge copper wiring (to connect the circuits).
