The most secure place seemed immediately the ancient crypt of saint Felice where there was a precious shrine of gold and rock crystal inside which was placed the whole body of the saint. The case was precious, but very cumbersome, for this reason it was moved to make room for the Romitone mirror. To give an idea of the size of the case I decided to post an exceptional document, which is the original engraving representing the case containing the entire skeleton of the body of San Felice. The mirror of the Romitone was hidden in the crypt which was then rendered inaccessible to prevent the devotees from entering. The faithful who were asking for the reason for closing the crypt were told that the German bombardment had destroyed the case and brought down the ceiling of the crypt. The case had been moved into an underground tunnel that led under the stone garden adjacent to Villa Huygens. The noble Antonio Huygens was built to build this tunnel in order to reach the church without being noticed. At this point I have to make an important clarification: there are two tunnels inside the church of the Valle Benedetta, a very old and long partly destroyed that connects the church with the hermitage of Sambuca, the same that Leale Martelli traveled entirely. The other, shorter and more recent, which connects the church with Villa Hyugens and emerges under the stone garden. This tunnel is still passable, but is hidden for obvious reasons. There is also a branch of this tunnel that passes under an ancient and huge well called "the well of the farm". In this well, on 8 January 1807, a certain Giovanni Petracchi laborer of Signora Agata Huygens, was sucked in, because he was aware of the fact that the noble Antonio Huygens had not died in 1717 ... Next time we will talk about the legend about the "well of the farm" and we will return to talk about San Felice.
