Huygens non entrò dal portone principale perché ad attenderlo sul lato destro della chiesa c’era il priore Tommaso del Bene. La cosa sorprese Pandolfo visto che anche lui aveva chiesto udienza al priore quella stessa mattina. Giunti al portone dei leoni Tommaso del Bene spiegò il motivo per il quale aveva preso due appuntamenti nella stessa mattina: “dato che dalle vostre missive si intuisce che il motivo della vostra presenza è il solito ho ritenuto opportuno dare unica udienza dato che da domani sarò assente per alcune settimane. Il vostro interessamento per il frate e cavaliere Antonio Martelli è sempre stato condiviso anche da me”. Sentito questo Huygens guardò dall’alto in basso il giovane Pandolfo e togliendosi il pesante mantello esclamò:” bene, avevo giusto bisogno di qualcuno che mi reggesse lo mantello stamane” e poi contiunò “dimmi giovanotto, cosa ti porta sui miei stessi passi? Avrai certo motivo ben valido pari al mio”. Pandolfo rispose: “mi cimento e mi diletto nell’arte e nella pittura ed in futuro voglio essere nobile cavaliere come lo fu Antonio Martelli. Voglio rendere omaggio alle sue spoglie, ma pare che nessuno sappia dove sia la sua tomba, di certo il priore saprà dare indicazioni in merito” e Huygens rispose: “giovanotto se diverrai un valido cavaliere avrai lo mio rispetto, ma se diverrai pure un valido pittore avrai pure le mie monete d’oro. Spero che la tua mano possa saper impugnare con forza la spada e guidare anco lo pennello con grazia divina”. In 1709 Huygens hosted the king of Denmark Frederick IV in the luxurious palace who, seeing Huygens throwing coins from the balcony, wanted to emulate him and surpass him in gesture, in fact he did not throw the poor ordinary money, but precious coins and some gold. At that point Huygens, in order not to fall behind, threw a small gold plate from the balcony that he used to set the table. The plates used by Huygens featured religious depictions such as crosses and the face of Christ on the bottom. Pandolfo Tidi certainly could not have known about this "mania" of Huygens, so he instinctively followed the nobleman with his gaze, attracted and intrigued by that eccentric character who seemed to walk like an actor about to enter the stage. Huygens did not enter through the main door because Prior Tommaso del Bene was waiting for him on the right side of the church. This surprised Pandolfo since he too had asked for an audience with the prior that same morning. Once at the lions door Tommaso del Bene explained the reason why he had made two appointments on the same morning: absent for a few weeks. Your interest in the friar and knight Antonio Martelli has always been shared by me as well". Hearing this Huygens looked down on the young Pandolfo and taking off his heavy cloak he exclaimed: "well, I just needed someone to hold my cloak this morning" and then continued "tell me young man, what brings you back in my steps? I want to pay homage to his remains, but it seems that no one knows where his tomb is, certainly the prior will be able to give indications on the matter" and Huygens replied: "young man, if you will become a valid knight you will have my respect, but if you will also become a valid painter you will also have my gold coins. I hope that your hand can grip the sword with strength and also guide the brush with divine grace".
