Demonic sigils are specific types of symbols or seals that are used in various magical traditions to represent, summon, or communicate with demonic entities.

These symbols are believed to hold the essence or the power of the demon they represent, acting as a focal point for rituals involving these entities.

The use of demonic sigils dates back to ancient times and has been incorporated into numerous magical practices and grimoires throughout history.

Historical Origins

The practice of using symbols or seals to represent demons is ancient, with roots in cultures around the world.

However, the formal use of demonic sigils is most notably documented in medieval and Renaissance grimoires—manuals of magic that include instructions for summoning and controlling spirits.

These texts, such as “The Lesser Key of Solomon” (also known as the Lemegeton), provide a catalog of demons, each accompanied by a unique sigil.

A sigil can have immense power because it’s a gateway to a specific power. It’s like having a direct line to a powerful person, except that the person is a spiritual force that is not constrained by the time and space continuum.

The ancients knew all too well that our world is not only physical, that there are entities among us that we cannot perceive with our ordinary senses, yet they can be communicated with through symbols which activate our higher intuitive faculties and open a gateway for their arrival.

Purpose and Use

Demonic sigils serve several purposes in magical practices:

  • Summoning: Sigils are used in rituals to summon demons, providing a method for the magician to focus their intention and call forth the entity.
  • Communication: Sigils facilitate communication with demonic entities, acting as a bridge between the practitioner and the spiritual realm.
  • Command: In some traditions, possessing a demon’s sigil gives the magician a degree of control over the entity, compelling it to perform tasks or grant the summoner’s requests.

I incorporate sigils in almost every summoning ritual that I perform. A sigil of a summoned demon can be utilized in various ways after the ritual.

For example, by carrying it with you, placing it in a prominent place in your home, an altar dedicated to the demon or in some cases of black magic, placing it near the person being targeted, buyring it, burning it etc.

Creation and Activation

Demonic sigils found in grimoires are traditionally received through mystical revelation or compiled from older texts. Modern practitioners may use these historical sigils or create new ones through various methods of sigilization, such as the rearrangement of letters from the demon’s name into a symbolic design.

Activating or charging a demonic sigil typically involves ritualistic practices. These can include specific invocations, the use of ceremonial magic tools, and the creation of a ritual space. The goal is to energize the sigil and open a channel of communication with the entity it represents.

There are also techniques that can be used to create a unique sigil that connects a person with a specific demon for the purposes of attunement. Such a sigil, being charged and activated to serve a single connection rather than everyone who chances upon it, can be a more powerful conduit. It is comparable to a dedicated vs shared network.

Authoritative Texts With Demonic Sigils

Some grimoires contain extensive lists of demonic entities, their attributes, and corresponding sigils. Here’s a list of some notable texts that include information and drawings of demonic sigils:

  1. The Lesser Key of Solomon (Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis) – Particularly the first section, known as the Ars Goetia, which details 72 demons along with their sigils and the methods for summoning them.
  2. The Greater Key of Solomon – While not as focused on demonic sigils as the Lesser Key, this text provides further insights into ceremonial magic, including the use of pentacles and sigils.
  3. The Grimoire of Honorius – Attributed to Pope Honorius III, this grimoire includes sigils and instructions for summoning spirits, including demons, and is known for blending Christian and pagan elements.
  4. The Book of Abramelin – Written by Abraham von Worms, this book describes an elaborate ritual known as the Abramelin Operation, designed to obtain the knowledge and conversation of one’s guardian angel but also includes information on the summoning of demons as part of its broader magical practice.
  5. The Pseudomonarchia Daemonum – An appendix of Johann Weyer’s “De Praestigiis Daemonum,” this text lists 69 demons (fewer than the Ars Goetia) along with brief descriptions and is notable for its critical perspective on the practice of demonology.
  6. The Munich Manual of Demonic Magic (Codex Latinus Monacensis 849) – A 15th-century grimoire, this manuscript focuses on necromancy and demonology, including sigils for summoning demons.
  7. The Grand Grimoire (The Red Dragon) – Known for its powerful rituals and the summoning of demonic forces, this book also contains sigils and instructions for making pacts with demons.
  8. The Black Pullet (La poule noire) – While primarily known for its talismans, this grimoire also includes methods for creating sigils and rings that are said to grant the user various powers, including control over demonic entities.
  9. The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses – These books are a collection of magical texts that purport to describe the magic practiced by Moses, including the use of seals and sigils associated with both angels and demons.

The sigils found in these texts are often used in their original form even today. There have also been many modifications and new sigils are constantly being created, especially by chaos magicians.

From my experience, you can never go wrong by using the standard sigils found in these texts. They’ve stood the test of time for a reason, and having been energetically reinforced throughout centuries through use of skilled practitioners they are bound to deliver better results than sigils created at a whim.

The only exception being when a skilled magician summons the demon and through his guidance crafts a new sigil dedicated to a single person. Or when a sigil is created to utilize for a black magic purpose once. But such sigils would clearly not be found in a publicly available book, for they would be useful for only that person.

This might hurt some feelings, but I think that these new grimoires popping up with an endless array of new sigils (for offense, defense, what have you) are, for the most part, a waste of time.

Using a Demonic Sigil for Attunement

Using a demonic sigil for attunement involves aligning oneself with the specific energy, qualities, or attributes associated with a particular demon.

To begin, you should clearly articulate your reason for seeking the attunement. Intentions could range from seeking knowledge, guidance in certain aspects of your life, personal transformation, or assistance in magical practices.

When you’re ready prepare a space where you can work undisturbed. This might involve cleansing the area energetically, setting up an altar, or arranging symbols and items that support your intention.

You can also cast a protective circle, evoke protective spirits, or any other protective practices you adhere to. A circle is useful not only for protection, but also for containing the energies that are raised during the process, allowing for a stronger experience.

With the sigil present, enter a meditative state. Focus on the sigil, allowing your mind to absorb its design and what it represents. Visualize the energy of the demon flowing through the sigil and aligning with your own energy.

Chanting or vocalizing the name of the demon can strengthen the connection and facilitate attunement. The demon’s enn can also be used for this purpose.

That is a simple, gentle way to gradually assume the demon’s attributes and should be done regularly to build and sustain the connection.

Such attunements can be done without a formal summoning ritual or they can be done after the ritual. Obviously, the effects are more powerful and come faster after the demon has been summoned, because it will be more readily available for the attunement.

Nonetheless, this is a simple, beginner friendly process for those that just want to dip their toe in the water and realize that most demons are not to be feared by the magician that summons them, contrary to the mainstream messaging that has created a harsh delineation between angels and demons.

Creating a Demonic Sigil for Black Magic

After entering a trance state conducive to performing magical acts, one can begin the assignment.

Using a mixture of ash and blood, the practitioner meticulously draws the sigil on a surface that resonates with dark energy, such as a piece of parchment made from the skin of a creature that met a violent end.

The sigil’s design is inspired by the name and nature of the demon it seeks to evoke, with each line and curve infused with the intent to harm, manipulate, or bind.

With the sigil complete, the practitioner recites an incantation, a litany that calls forth the demon from the abyss. This is a pact expressed vocally that promises something in exchange, be it the sorcerer’s own vitality or something more elusive, for the demon’s assistance.

As the demon responds to the summons, its essence flowing through the sigil, the practitioner focuses their malevolent desires into the symbol.

Whether seeking to curse an enemy, spread misfortune, or bind another’s will, the sorcerer uses the sigil as a conduit for their dark intentions. They visualize the harm or chaos they wish to unleash, pouring their malevolence into the sigil until it becomes a living embodiment of their will.

With the ritual reaching its zenith, the practitioner releases the charged sigil into the world. This can be done by burning the parchment, allowing the smoke to carry the curse to its intended target (symbolically or literally, depending on the distance), or by burying it in the earth, where it festers and spreads its malevolent roots.

Some may choose to hide the sigil in the victim’s belongings, silently infecting their life with its dark influence.

As the deed is done, the sorcerer must now seal the pact with the demon. This usually involves a sacrifice, symbolic or literal, to satisfy the entity’s hunger for a return on its aid.

The nature of this offering varies, but it is always something of personal significance or value, ensuring the practitioner’s bondage to the demon’s whims. A blood offering is most commonly utilized. Pricking one’s finger or slashing the palm and allowing blood to drip as a libation is a well received offering.

Final Thoughts

I hope that you’ve found this information interesting and helpful, which it most certainlty will be should you decide to incorporate sigils in your own magical practice.
