I've seen full spectrum cameras being used for quite some time, they pop up on shows such as Ghost Adventures and Most Haunted and though a lot of specialized paranormal stores do sell them you can actually make one yourself. By trade I'm a photographer so I have a lot of spare cameras. The weather here was terrible today so up for a bit of an adventure I thought I'd sacrifice one to the Gods of curiosity and see if I could pull it off. Sure enough it does work, the main thing I did was remove the cameras UV filter plate from the RGB sensor. the risks involved would be, shock from the cameras flash capacitor, damaging the sensor itself and depending on the type of camera you might damage the focus calibration.
It took about 40 to 50mins and in the end it worked perfectly. I've not used full spectrum before and I don't hunt ghosts per-say but given the price of some professionally modified cameras it might be worth trying if you were in the market for one and already had a cheap digital one you don't use any more
There are plenty of tutorials on youtube and the type of camera I modified was a fuji Finepix.
