Blurred photos of an unkempt man carrying a "spear" in a German forest have fueled speculation about the legend of a "wolf man" roaming the forests of the Harz mountain region.
Two photos taken by hikers Gina Weiss and her friend Tobi in the German mountains show a naked and hairy man sitting on a rock, holding a long stick in his left hand and scratching the rock with another "tool" held in his right hand.
The 30-year-old German man walked through Blankenburg in Saxony-Anhalt until dusk on Tuesday. – When we reached the sandstone caves, we saw the “wolf man,” Weiss told the German tabloid Bild.
He stood at the top of one of the caves, holding a long wooden staff that resembled a spear. He kept his eyes on us and didn't say a word, he recalls, adding that the meeting lasted almost ten minutes.
“He looked dirty and acted like a Stone Age man from a history book,” she continued.
Mysterious hermit or just a joke?
According to "Bild", the man has been seen sporadically since 2015. Local authorities also previously claimed that they had found evidence that an unknown person was starting fires and building simple houses in the forest.
However, one volunteer from the local fire brigade revealed in an interview with the British daily "The Daily Telegraph" that he did not notice anything unusual in the forest. He said that the rumors about the mysterious "wolf man" were "nonsense" and that the photos sent to Bild were a stupid joke.
