Former priory and home of the poet Lord Byron is said to be haunted by several different ghosts. It was built aroundd 1170A.D. and later bought by Sir John Byron. It remained in the Byron family for over 300 yrs. According to superstition, turning a religious house into a secular one is a recepit for misfortune and over the years, the Byron family had more than its share of bad luck and declining fortune. The romantic poet Lord Byron(1788-1824) was the last of his family to own the house. When it was given to Lord Byron, the house was in terrible disrepair. His father, known as the "wicked Lord", lived and died alone in the scullery, the only room that was intact against water. In 1817, Byron went ot venice and sold the property. The bad luck stayed with each sussessive owner who were plagued by misfortune after misfortune.The "Black Friar Ghost", is the most famous ghost to allegedly appear at Newstead Abbey. His apperance was though to be a bad omen for the Byron family. Byron claimed to have seem him on the eve of his wedding in 1815, which he later described as "the most unhappy event of his life". The marriage ended a year later. A "White Lady" is said to haunt the estate, the daughter of a bookseller who was infatuated and obsessed with the dashing poet.
Although Byron is said not to haunt the place, his beloved Newfoundland, "Bosun" or "Boatswain",most definately does. Byron had the "Newfie"( a nickname we Newfoundland owners refer to our breed by), buried on the high altar at the abbey and left instructions he as to be interned there also, next to his beloved dog that pehaps was the only man or beast that made him happy. His old servant Murray, told Byron that he doubted that Byron's wished would be fulfilled, due to his fame and how high the British people thought of him and his works. Some say it is the restless ghost of Byron faithful Newfoundland roaming the abbey and its grounds lookinng for his master."Famous Newfoundlands", (The Newfound Club of America, plus personal experiences with my "Newfie" when we went to visit the estate)
