Stupidity in space... or Space Elevator...

So I was thinking about this program where they were explaining the in's and out's of a space elevator. You know.. How it would work, what it would do, the dangers of it. Then something crossed my mind. Now don't think too hard on this or your head might explode.

Everytime we watch something cut through the upper atmosphere into space it is usually depicted as being on fire almost. I'm assuming this is from some sort of friction type event. (I'm not a rocket scientist). But, what would happen if we sent something up slowly and straight up? I mean like a balloon. Obviously a balloon would burst, but let's say it wouldn't burst or anything like that, and we could control it to go up slowly. Would we still see this friction or fire or whatever it is?
