Let’s begin by acknowledging that meditation is really useful even if you’re not a magician. Why? Because everyone needs more clarity, focus and all of that good stuff to be a high functioning individual. But why would it be useful for ceremonial magic? Well, for the same reasons. Ritual work requires a very high level of concentration so that you can channel your energy or invoke the spirit’s energy. If you’re getting distracted by silly thoughts about your last meal or when Napoleon is coming to the theaters, you’ll perform a subpar ritual. You have to be able to cut down on the mental chatter and be in the moment. Meditation also helps you with the opposite of focus – that is, letting go of selective, judgmental and partial thinking and submerging into a trance state so that the subconscious and intuitive part of your psyche can reign for a while. The trance state allows you to connect with reality on a more fundamental, magical level, where the clear boundaries of matter and spirit no longer constrain one’s ability to perceive and interact with invisible entities or to feel the power that permeates the totality of existence. Therefore, it is paramount that you meditate and obtain a greater control over your mind. You should be able to switch from high level of focus to a deep trance state at will, without the use of psychedelics or any performance enhancers. Then you can really master the art of ceremonial magic to a degree where summoning any spirit is not a matter of guesswork but a given. That’s not to say that you can’t practice rituals even if you’re a mental mess. But it’d be better to master yourself before attempting to master others, even more so if you plan on dealing with the spirits of the Ars Goetia. Now, what meditation techniques do I propose? For beginners:

TM or any other mantra type meditation for improving concentration.
Mindfulness meditation for the relaxation necessary to enter a trance state. Ideally you’d practice both, at least twice a day.
After focusing on a mantra has become easy, you can start to visualize different objects with your eyes closed, and try to keep the image for as long as you can, without interruptions. As for mindfulness, you can extend it so that it becomes a constant mental state throughout the day, unless you need to actually concentrate on something for practical reasons. This way you will be able to engage your mind fully when you need it AND be able to relax fully when you don’t need it. Naturally, this will allow you to perform magick at a higher level as well. Keep it simple when starting out, and remember that your goal, regardless of the methods employed, is to develop two powers, which at the peak of your power you’d be able to tap into at will:

Complete, laser-focused engagement of the mind.
Complete mindfulness, so that no thoughts, objects or actions elicit a conscious response from you.
In other words, you could be fully active, or fully passive. Yin, yang, fire, water, you get it. And now is not the time to be passive. Turn on the ambitious flame in your heart, assume a meditative posture and fight for supremacy on the greatest battlefield in existence – your mind.
