Hey opmmur, have you heard or felt any earthquake activity in your area lately? Have you ever gone to the San Andreas Fault? I always wanted to go there and stand on it.

Another Rare Oarfish Washes Up in Southern California

Scientists Can't Explain Rare Oarfish Found in California | NBC Southern California

San Diegans can't stop talking about the mysterious oarfish that washed ashore. What scientists are saying about the rare encounter. NBC 7's Chris Chan talks with Fernando Nosratpour, curator at Birch Aquarium.

Scientists have no answers as to why two of the largest bony fish known to man washed ashore in Southern California in the span of a few days.

Days after a rare oarfish measuring 18 feet was discovered off Catalina Island, a second oarfish measuring 14 feet washed ashore in Oceanside Harbor.

A crowd of 50 to 75 beachgoers gathered around the carcass of the silver-bodied oarfish before The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration arrived to retrieve the fish. Police said the 14-foot-long fish was cut into pieces and hauled away in coolers.

Officers said they had never witnessed anything like it, but they recognized the mysterious, deep-water fish after it made national headlines earlier this week.

"The only reason we knew what it was, was because we saw the news reports from Catalina," Oceanside Police Officer Jon Hoover said.

It took more than 15 people to drag an oarfish from the waters off Catalina Island on Sunday, Oct. 13. A marine science instructor was snorkeling when she spotted the 18-foot carcass with eyes the size of half dollars.

It's been nearly 20 years since researchers at the Birch Aquarium in San Diego have heard about in oarfish in local waters, but they remember it well.

“Last time was in 1996 in Coronado and I believe that was a 23-foot one,” said Fernando Nosratpour, Curator of Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Nosratpour shared video of the oarfish swimming in its environment with NBC 7 and said the clip gives scientists a closer look at the strange creatures.

The video was captured in the Gulf of Mexico, taken by scientists at Louisiana State University's School of the Coast and Environment, and published with the Journal of Fish Biology.

“Kind of swimming upright, kind of looking upwards for food maybe,” Nosratpour said. “They have an unusual way of swimming they have a long dorsal fin on top of their body.”

He said the discovery of an oarfish in San Diego County offers the chance to find out what can be learned from these mysterious deep-sea fish.

“Probably look at the gut, see what it's been eating, that'll be interesting,” he said.

“Again, comparing all these things to the ones that they've found in the past and see if things match up or if there's something different.”

OARFISH,
FISH WITH LARGE-SCALE EARTHQUAKE DETECTOR

The Signs of the Disaster,
seemed to have felt a week before the incident by a group of Oarfish.
Swarm of Fish were found stranded on the Coasts of Japan,
a week before the Tsunami swept the East Coast of Japan…
According to the Ancient Customs of Japan,
these Fish swim to the surface and the beach as a Harbinger of the Coming Earthquake.
Some Scientists believe the Fish that live in the deep ocean is Very Sensitive to Movement of the Earth and usually always Precede the Occurrence of Earthquakes….

Oarfish omen spells earthquake disaster for Japan

Japan is bracing itself after dozens of rare giant oarfish - traditionally the harbinger of a powerful earthquake - have been washed ashore or caught in fishermen's nets.

The appearance of the fish follows Saturday's destructive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile and the January 12 tremors in Haiti, which claimed an estimated 200,000 lives.

A quake with a magnitude of 6.4 has also struck southern Taiwan.

This rash of tectonic movements around the Pacific "Rim of Fire" is heightening concern that Japan - the most earthquake-prone country in the world - is next in line for a major earthquake.

Those concerns have been stoked by the unexplained appearance of a fish that is known traditionally as the Messenger from the Sea God's Palace.

The giant oarfish can grow up to five metres in length and is usually to be found at depths of 1,000 metres and very rarely above 200 metres from the surface. Long and slender with a dorsal fin the length of its body, the oarfish resembles a snake.

In recent weeks, 10 specimens have been found either washed ashore or in fishing nets off Ishikawa Prefecture, half-a-dozen have been caught in nets off Toyama Prefecture and others have been reported in Kyoto, Shimane and Nagasaki prefectures, all on the northern coast.

According to traditional Japanese lore, the fish rise to the surface and beach themselves to warn of an impending earthquake - and there are scientific theories that bottom-dwelling fish may very well be susceptible to movements in seismic fault lines and act in uncharacteristic ways in advance of an earthquake - but experts here are placing more faith in their constant high-tech monitoring of the tectonic plates beneath the surface.

"In ancient times Japanese people believed that fish warned of coming earthquakes, particularly catfish," Hiroshi Tajihi, deputy director of the Kobe Earthquake Centre, told the Daily Telegraph.

"But these are just old superstitions and there is no scientific relationship between these sightings and an earthquake," he said.

Oarfish, Fish With Large-Scale Earthquake Detector…
Believed To Herald Earthquakes…

Was actually talking to my friend about this tonight. We both agree after doing some research into oarfish and earthquakes, that something might happen with the west coast. Its interesting when you think about it, that 20 oarfish washed up on Japan's coast, right before that earthquake struck. There are even accounts of oarfish and other deep sea creatures washing up on the west coast, before that major earthquake in the 1900s over in california.

It would make sense that undersea vibrations caused by the fault lines would disturb habitats of these fish. We see evidence of this even in other animals like deer and birds. Large flocks of birds mysteriously flying away all of a sudden, the moment before an earthquake or tsunami hits, the same for deer and other animals rampaging through fields, trying to get away.

They said that during the Indonesia earthquake in 2004, before the tsunami hit, that hundreds of animals and birds actually ended up doing just that, running away.

Its why I rather trust a dog with the weather than the weatherman on the tv, who rarely gets shit right. (it was supposed to snow today, but it didnt, was clear all day)

7.3 quake strikes off Japan; no tsunami threat

7.3 quake strikes off Japan; no tsunami threat - CNN.com

7.3 earthquake strikes near Japan
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • NEW: Japanese agency cancels tsunami warnings and advisories
  • NEW: It says sea levels may rise, but doesn't expect tsunami damage
  • The quake struck early Saturday about 200 miles east of Japan's main island
(CNN) -- A 7.3 magnitude earthquake rumbled early Saturday in the Pacific Ocean about 200 miles east of Japan's main island, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Japanese coastal areas including the Fukushima prefecture, warning people to leave the coast."

The same organization canceled all such advisories and warnings a short time later.

Sea levels might change slightly in some coastal locales, but no damage from a tsunami was expected, according to the agency.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said there was no widespread tsunami threat around the greater Pacific region.

Saturday's quake happened at about 2:10 a.m. local time, with an epicenter about 203 miles east-northeast of Tokyo, the USGS said. The quake hit at a depth of about six miles.

The Fukushima prefecture was where a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami damaged several nuclear reactors in March 2011. More than 15,000 people were killed in that quake and tsunami, and material damage related to the incident was estimated to be about $300 billion.
