AP's hacked Twitter account tweets 'Two Explosions in White House'

After being compromised, the Associated Press' Twitter account posted "an erroneous tweet" claiming that two explosions occurred in the White House and that President Barack Obama is injured. Moments later, the @AP Twitter account was suspended as the false message continued to exist in over four thousand retweets.

"That's a bogus tweet," an AP spokesperson initially told NBC News, as "AP Twitter" began to trend on the social network. "That's all I have for you right now."

A wire statement issued later explained that the tweet "came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists."

We've reached out to Twitter for additional comment. In the meantime, we do know that social media accounts associated with CBS News programs "60 Minutes" and "48 Hours" were compromised on Saturday. We do not know if Tuesday's compromise is related to Saturday's.

Bogus AP tweet on White House briefly slams stocks

Stocks suddenly took a sharp plunge Tuesday, with the Dow briefly turning negative, but quickly zipped back up to previous levels within minutes following a rumor of explosion at the White House.

Stocks took a sharp nosedive following a false AP tweet that indicated there were explosions at the White House and that the President had been injured. The AP confirmed its Twitter feed was hacked and the spokesman said the tweet was "bogus."

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney held a press conference shortly following AP's Twitter post, saying "the President is fine."
