Re: Ask away... Hello God, welcome to the forum. Here is one of my posts from another thread that might interest you. Suppose that you had been born in a world completely devoid of religion; this includes spiritual illusionment, or the belief that there are certain natural process which neither man nor machine can ever understand. The technological state of this world would be similar to that of the present West. Forms of religion would never have existed, and therefore could not be taught, although the theory of religion, as the escapist self-illusionment that it is, could be studied. Mental processes such as astral projection which many, in the face of the takeover of secular scientific dominance, now use to continue their mysticism, would be taught in a similar way to vortex theory or spacetime; things that we cannot yet scientifically explain, but will one day, probably soon, be able to according to the pattern of history. Seeing the benefits of living in a disillusioned way, you would never consider the existence of gods or excersise personal mysticism. This is just a hypothetical scenario; religion is a natural side effect of sentiency that developed early on in the development of the homo sapien. It is simultaneously a tool with which to explain that which we do not understand, and a comfort for those of us with the common fear of ultimate brain death or the responsibility of being the dominant sentient species of a planet. Similarly to the comparison between people believing lightning storms were reflections of the anger of the gods back in medieval times and modern day science explaining lightning storms as side effects of thermal currents and particles charging in the atmosphere, the modern day belief that astral projection (a phenomenon not yet properly explained by science) is a link to spirituality or 'God' will one day be explained as an entirely scientific process with no mysticism involved. History and technology have given us the advantage of hindsight. With the robotic singularity, in popular scientific opinion, drawing close, we must accept that we are self-justifiable for our beliefs. If we are to take on the responsibility of creating sentient or partially sentient beings through technology, we must also take on the responsibility for our own disillusionment. The human race can no longer justify its actions by theology. We are not answerable to any 'god', but to the security of the world of the future and of known life itself.
