The old argument if it cannot be seen or documented then its not real, until a way to document and quantify what was previously discounted then it becomes real when there are apparatus to support such.

That then says those that could see that before so called scientific proof came along what were they mad?

No one to my knowledge has ever made such a claim, much less is such a claim an "old argument."
If there is no evidence for a thing, that means there is no reason to believe the thing exists or existed.
Such a statement doesn't imply a thing is not real, merely that there is no reason to think it was real.
