California declared a state of emergency on Wednesday due to the spread of bird flu in the state.
The move is aimed at enhancing its preparedness measures and accelerating cross-agency response efforts, the governor’s office said.
“This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak. Building on California’s testing and monitoring system — the largest in the nation — we are committed to further protecting public health, supporting our agriculture industry, and ensuring that Californians have access to accurate, up-to-date information,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.
“While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus,” he said.
The news comes after health officials announced that a person in Louisiana has the first severe illness caused by bird flu in the nation.
The patient had been around sick and dead birds in backyard flocks.
The individual was not identified and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did not immediately detail their symptoms.
Additional testing is underway to examine the virus infecting the patient.
