A scalar wave is a longitudinal wave like sound waves except they are made from aether. Tesla created them by his "hairpin circuit" when he was trying to find out why people were being electrocuted sometimes when they opened a high tension switch from generating stations. They are known to travel with electricity in wires but have trouble navigating sharp turns and like to travel in broad curvatures. So, instead of following the electricity around a hairpin circuit, they will go on a straighter path outside of the wire circuit sometimes taking the electricity with it. Light is not a scalar wave. Light needs a medium to travel in and will follow the path afforded by that medium. The medium (aether) is distorted around gravitational objects which is why starlight is displaced as it passes a celestial object of heavy mass.
