Well, we still have capital punishment...
Perhaps if we recruited from death row and allowed anyone to go free who won 10 bouts we would have some contestants.
Staging the fights at a large amphitheater with sale of pay-per-view rights would allow the criminal justice system to recoup some of its costs.

Good concept. Flawed follow through. Contestants have 3 seconds to hit the ball or take simultaneous 8 irons to the head and knees. The competitor is allowed to defend with pepper spray and his own club. I really would pay to watch this.
