I'm going to buy new quartz crystals in order to build an pendulum.
What should I buy? Are there better crystal than others? I found
a bunch of huge crystals on Ebay for 10 bucks. Are they any good or is it a scam?
I'm looking for information from members who have experience acquiring crystals. How do you choose them and why?
- Are crystals from certain parts of the world better? Tibet, China, Arkansas?
- Are double terminated crystals really better?
- Where should I buy them?
- If I'm to buy them at a local store where I live, how can I choose the right one(s)?

The best way to choose crystals is to just hold them in your hands and see how they feel. Certain stones resonate better with certain people than others.
If you can find one, gem shows are a good place to get crystals at good prices. I'd avoid buying any online if you're not familiar with the supplier. They could be fake. Even clear quartz crystal, which isn't very expensive, is sometimes just clear glass or plastic. That's another good reason to buy them somewhere where you can actually look at them and touch them, even if you can't tell by looking, they just won't "feel" the same because they won't give off the energy that a real one would. "New Age" and "Occult" type shops often have at least a small selection of crystals. They're usually genuine.
I see you got one at a mine. That's a good place too.
Personally, I have never found the shape or size or points of a crystal or stone to matter, but it all depends on the individual. Use what works for you. Once you've been working with them for a while, you'll start to get a feel of what does and does not.
Some reasons people may prefer double-terminated crystals are:

Double terminated crystals have distinct points at both ends. A double termination radiates or absorbs energy at both ends concurrently. This causes it to channel energy in two directions at once. A double terminated crystal integrates spirit and matter and offers an effective bridge between two energy points.
Healing with double terminated crystals
These are useful to absorb negative energy and break old patterns. They are sometimes used in overcoming addictions. When placed on the third eye, double terminated stones can increase telepathic ability.
If you're planning on using it to make a pendulum, I'd recommend meditating with it for a while first to get it attuned to your energies. And you definitely need to clean it before you start using it. Methods for clearing stones include soaking them in salt water overnight, smudging, leaving them out in the sunlight and/or moonlight, and some can be placed on another larger crystal with cleansing properties. Some stones should not be put into salt water as they are too soft and it will cause them to break. Methods for cleansing and charging crystals can be found online or in any sort of "magical" crystal books (i.e. not a geological reference book).
As far as crystals from certain parts of the world being better than others, I would say, if the particular crystal you are looking for only exists in certain parts of the world, then yes, those would be the only ones likely to be genuine (which also usually makes them very expensive), and possibly of better quality. Any others would probably be factory created. The only other reason I could think of would be if the crystal is said to come from a certain place on Earth known to be over certain energy points, ley lines, etc. or someplace known for supernatural phenomena or something like that, it might be claimed that it would be better. Whether there's anything to support such claims, I don't know. Otherwise, I can't see any reason the origin of the stone would matter.
