Jon Stewart or the Mainstream Media — Who is Right and Wrong About Ebola Risks?

Let’s start by being very clear here. A couple of nurses contracting Ebola after treating patients that had Ebola does not an epidemic make. Non-stop 24/7 news coverage from the fear-mongering mainstream media is fueling panic surrounding what has still so far only been very isolated and explainable cases of Ebola in the United States.

Meet the nation’s leading Ebola expert.

Now that we’ve got that disclaimer out of the way, the funny thing is that like with so many things in America, there are only two polar opposite sides of this thing and not enough people voicing concerns from the middle. Enter Jon Stewart, the host of the wildly popular Daily Show that too many people mistake with being real news (incidentally, people also make this mistake with Republican counterpart Bill O’Reilly). Stewart blasted the way Ebola is being portrayed in the mainstream media and the panic resulting. We’re with you that far Jon. But then he turns around and mocks members of Congress for asking that flights from Ebola-stricken countries in Africa be banned for some amount of time. What’s wrong with that? Don’t worry, we are about to tell you.

Like we said, you have two polar opposites at work there both spreading their own version of propaganda. The mainstream media is trying to panic people with its portrayal of the Ebola “crisis” in America. Jon Stewart goes the other direction, slamming this portrayal, but at the same time, acting like it’s equally as ludicrous to take a very reasonable safety measure that many other nations around the world have had in place since the very beginning. So, there you go. You can only have your news vanilla or chocolate. No swirl.

Common Sense Conspiracy represents the middle way of thinking, so here is the voice you are not hearing anywhere. Basically, there is no reason to think that America is about to experience a plague-like Ebola crisis. There’s no reason to call into work tomorrow or keep your kids home from school. But not letting people that have an excellent chance of carrying the virus into the country by the minute with no restrictions whatsoever… that is equally as dumb of a way to look at it.

There is a such thing as a moderate reaction, but you won’t get it from the mainstream media or Jon Stewart.

By the way, we do know and understand that Jon Stewart is actually a part of the mainstream media.

I find it very sad how this comedian has become a source of news for many people.

Ebola is a very serious issue. One user on abovetopsecret, ikonoklast, has made many graphs and projections based on the data released by the World Health Organization. Here's one of his latest charts:

Notice that the progression of the spread is an exponential curve.

The UN also warns that it has 60 days to get Ebola under control. Although this information was just recently released, the 60 day countdown actually started on October 1st.

JadedANDcynical of abovetopsecret has pointed out some flaws in the "promises" made by the CDC.

Let me also point out that there have been minimal studies that show that Ebola can only be spread when symptoms are shown.

There is real reason to be worried about Ebola. There is a clear mix-up between "panic" and "information" going on here. Most of the time, the media is keeping viewers up-to-date on information surrounding Ebola, due to its seriousness, which is completely acceptable. They aren't posting a bunch of articles and stories that say something like "Local expert says that we are beyond the point of no return and we are doomed".
