As a side note, I think the concept of metal implants is pretty awesome. I wonder how realistic it is though. Then again... we're talking about potential aliens, maybe it doesn't have to be realist or believable.
Biologically grown metal implants would be even better. That way they can repair themselves in the event of damage. I guess any real technology beyond that would have to be surgically implanted. Maybe nanites could build it internally.

I'm not sure our central nervous systems are DESIGNED to have all those nanoparticles in us.
I have heard that some aliens are "organic robots" that are built to function that way.
