Here is Murmur’s description from the Ars Goetia:

The Fifty-fourth Spirit is called Murmur, or Murmus or Murmux. He is a Great Duke, and an Earl; and appeareth in the Form of a Warrior riding upon a Gryphon, with a Ducal Crown upon his Head. There do go before him those his Ministers with great Trumpets sounding. His Office is to teach Philosophy perfectly, and to constrain Souls Deceased to come before the Exorcist to answer those questions which he may wish to put to them, if desired. He was partly of the Order of Thrones, and partly of that of Angels. He now ruleth 30 Legions of Demons of Hell.

Murmur’s Powers

Murmurando-1-1.jpg

From the description above we see that Murmur is a very versatile demon with powers ranging from supreme philosophical knowledge to necromancy.

I should point out that ‘Philosophy’ in this grimoire, and many others, does not refer only to the discursive philosophy of the likes of Plato and Aristotle. It also refers to magick and related fields.

Sometimes the term ‘Philosophy’ is used, at other times the term is more specific and you will find the word ‘Art’, or more specifically ‘Astrology’, ‘Necromancy’ etc. Point being, Murmur can be summoned to help with the acquisition of magical and purely discursive knowledge. The two in a traditional sense are not exclusive because theory and practice ought to be in alignment.

Perhaps the more interesting and unique power of Murmur pertains to necromancy. That is, allowing the magician to communicate with the deceased, ask them questions and obtain truthful answers. The wording at this point is very precise, because it is said ‘to constrain Souls Deceased’.

Constraining is a vital aspect of necromancy because deceased souls are never at rest, they are on a journey from death to rebirth. They have to be ‘constrained’ in a single place for a moment so that communication can be achieved. Otherwise they are unable to heed one’s calls. This is where Murmur truly shines and why every necromancer should be well acquainted with him.

Murmur’s Correspondences:

These are some symbolic correspondences that have been noticed over the years by multiple magicians that have worked with Murmur. Meaning, the use of this particular data when creating a ritual allowed for a stronger connection with the demon.

This doesn’t mean that any of it is essential for creating an effective Murmur ritual, only that it could increase its potency. Further experimentation is needed and welcome when it comes to correspondences for Murmur and other demons as well.

Murmur Summoning Ritual for Knowledge

This is a relatively simple ritual, on the condition that you can enter tune yourself into the demon’s frequency.

Items Required:

  1. A magic circle and triangle.
  2. Murmur’s sigil.
  3. Athame.
  4. Ritual robe.
  5. Green candles.
  6. Incense holder.
  7. Sandalwood incense.
  8. Copper bowl.
  9. A piece of emerald or amethyst.
  10. Fresh parsley leaves.

Preparation:

  1. Dress Appropriately: Wear your ritual robe, ensuring it is clean and free of any impurities.
  2. Select a Sacred Space: Choose a quiet location where you won’t be disturbed, preferably facing the North direction as it aligns with Murmur’s energies.
  3. Cleanse the Area: Prior to starting the ritual, ensure the area is clean. You may smudge the area with sage or sprinkle saltwater to purify it.
  4. Draw the Magic Circle: Use the athame or chalk to draw a large circle, depending on the surface. This will allow you to concentrate your energy in the area and also protect you from interferences.
  5. Set the Triangle: Outside of the circle, draw a triangle pointing inwards. This is where you’ll invite Murmur to appear.
  6. Candle Arrangement: Place green candles at each point of the triangle. Green resonates with Murmur’s associated planet Venus and his color symbolism.
  7. Place the Crystals: Inside the triangle, place the emerald or amethyst or both. These stones will amplify Murmur’s energy and strengthen your connection to him.
  8. Sigil: Draw or print out Murmur’s sigil, place it in the middle of the triangle.
  9. Copper Bowl & Parsley: Place the copper bowl on the sigil in the center of the triangle and fill it with fresh parsley leaves, linking to the Earth element and the metal that corresponds with Murmur.

Ritual Process:

  1. Light the Candles: Start with the candle at the top of the triangle and move clockwise. As you light them, focus on your intention to gain knowledge.
  2. Ignite the Incense: Light the sandalwood incense and place it in the incense holder, allowing the aroma to permeate the ritual space.
  3. Enter the Circle: Step into the circle with your athame. Holding it aloft, call upon the four elements, starting with Earth, then Water, followed by Air, and finally Fire.
  4. Invocation of Murmur: Standing facing North, recite: “Great Duke Murmur, Spirit of Earth and Water, ruler of the North and Keeper of Hidden Knowledge, I summon thee. I seek your wisdom and guidance. Grace this circle with your presence.
  5. Meditative State: Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and visualize Murmur’s energy surrounding you. Feel the energy of the North, the calming essence of Earth and Water, and the warmth of Venus. Keep your mind open to any insights or messages.
  6. Engage with Murmur: Politely present your questions or topics you seek knowledge about. Always remain respectful.
  7. Thank Murmur: After you’ve received your guidance or once you feel the energy wane, thank Murmur for his presence and wisdom. “Murmur, Great Duke of Knowledge, thank you for your guidance and wisdom. Depart in peace and let there always be harmony between us.
  8. Closing the Circle: Extinguish the candles in reverse order, starting from the last one you lit. Clear the triangle, and using the athame, cut the energy of the circle starting from the North and moving counter-clockwise. As you do so, visualize the circle’s energy being grounded back into the Earth.
  9. Ground Yourself: Sit or lie down, absorbing the residual energies and grounding them through your body. Visualize roots extending from your body deep into the Earth, anchoring you and allowing any excess energy to be absorbed by the ground.

Post-Ritual:

It’s useful to journal your experiences after the ritual, noting any messages, symbols, or feelings you received. Over time, this will deepen your connection with Murmur and aid in interpreting his guidance.

Remember, like all rituals, your intent and respect are the most crucial components. Always approach with an open heart and mind.

Try not to act submissively towards the demon, but don’t go to the other extreme either. It’s best to keep a balanced attitude, seeing your relationship as an alliance that wishes to exert your power in this world with joint effort.

Conclusion

Hopefully this ritual will prove useful to you. Murmur is an interesting demon and I’ve acquired some penetrating insights from him. I’ve also used his services on two occasions to strengthen a necromantic ritual with a notable historical figure. I will perhaps expand on this interesting episode in the future.
