Re: Patriot Act type legislation
Sorry for the double post, but an OpEd piece in USA Today puts the Padilla ruling on a personal basis, as in, what if it happened to you. I'm not Padilla is innocent, and I'm not a terrorist sympathizer. But as a U.S. citizen, he deserves to be tried or released. PERIOD. That's the Constitution the feds are jackin' with. If the feds prevail on Padilla, we're all at risk of being labelled an "enemy combatant." How can that be? The feds just declare you that, and with a "win" in the Padilla case, there's no court, lawyer, or anything that can help you. You become the property of the govt. and they do with you as they see fit. Not a pleasant thought.

This case is not just about Jose Padilla. It\'s about every citizen\'s liberty. If the foundations of freedom crumble under the stresses of the war on terrorism, the terrorists will have won.</span>
