Remember this one? I never had a chance to read the entire story about it until today. Thanks to Computorbug for bringing this one up in the chatroom tonight, while we were talking about various paranormal phenomenons out of the blue. :)

On Sunday, May 24, 1964, English fireman Jim Templeton, of the Cumbrian Fire Service, in Carlisle, Cumberland, took his wife and five-year-old daughter Elizabeth on a picnic. He selected a nearby popular nature resort called the Burgh Marsh.

That day Jim noticed a feel of "electricity" in the air similar to that felt before a thunderstorm. Normally, sheep and cows would be grazing throughout the large meadow but he noticed they were all clustered together at the far end of the field as though fearful of something.

Aside from the three of them, the only other people in sight that day were two elderly women in a car about 400 yards away from their picnic spot. When Elizabeth had gathered some flowers, Jim took the above photo of his smiling daughter.

Several days later, when Jim picked his film up from the local drugstore, the owner said "It's a shame. Someone just ran into your best picture." "That's impossible," said Jim. "No one was there that afternoon." However, upon inspection, one photo of his daughter clearly revealed a tall figure standing a short distance behind the five-year-old wearing what appears to be a white space suit and helmet.

Jim showed the picture to friends, co-workers, the police and finally Kodak. No one could explain it but Kodak asked permission to use it in an advertisement offering anyone who solved the mystery a lifelong supply of free film. No one had the solution. Tampering was ruled out as well after the negative was examined and proved not to be a double-exposure or some other image manipulation.

That same year, in Woomera, Australia, England began launching its new "Blue Streak Rockets." During one of the launches, a strange event occurred. One of the technicians, while following launch preparations on a monitor, noticed two tall men in white spacesuits close to the launch tower. The countdown was immediately stopped and security searched the entire area but the two mystery figures were never found.

The Australian press, however, had recently published Jim Templeton's photo of "The Cumbrian Spaceman," the Australian technician had seen it, recognized a dramatic similarity and commented that "he looks like the boys I saw on the monitor."

Interestingly, the Blue Streak Rockets being launched in Australia, where the two mystery spacemen were seen, were originally manufactured at a facility on Carlisle-Newcastle road back in England -- in the immediate neighborhood of the Burgh Marsh where Jim Templeton had first unknowingly photographed "The Cumbrian Spaceman."

While some people dismissed the photo as a fake, a few weeks after Jim's picture was taken, two men in dark suits visited Mr. Templeton at work, claimed they were with "Her Majesty's government" (but refused to show verifying credentials) and asked him to take them to the exact spot where the photograph was taken. Upon arriving at the original Burgh Marsh site, one of the men asked "And that's where you saw the man?" "I didn't SEE any man," answered Jim. With that, the two men left immediately leaving Jim Templeton to walk the five miles back to his station house with more questions but no answers.

I wonder what technological means someone has to have in order to remain invisible to the naked eye but yet show up on camera. Only thing I could think of (if that is a real person standing there) is that its psychic influence on the minds of others to remain invisible to their eyes but not to technology.

I do not know if the picture is real or fake. But if we can get past the debate, that it is a fake, I would like to share a story that is absolutely true.

I used to work with an older psychic lady that owned a new age health-food store. This lady had a granddaughter and in one out of three pictures taken was a white rabbit. I have personally seen pictures of a family gathering and in the front row, withstanding by the granddaughter's feet was a white rabbit facing the camera. When the picture was taken, there was no white rabbit; it showed up after the film was developed. The white rabbit was not a blur or other anomaly of the sun; it was a very clear image of a large white rabbit. She also had other pictures of the
granddaughter taken at different times over of five or six year period of time, which other pictures had the same large white rabbit at the granddaughter's feet.

The grandmother checked all the pictures out using her psychic powers and came to the conclusion that the rabbit was a spiritual helper of her granddaughters. As the granddaughter grew older 10 or 11 years old the rabbit stopped appearing in her pictures.

I offer this story as possibility: answer of what we're seeing here with this little girl and the spaceman. The spaceman could be her spiritual helper, based upon the above story.

Professor, this a very interesting comment. I never heard of a spaceman-spiritual guide, but I like the idea. I guess a spiritual helper can have any shape right? Perhaps it will be a rabbit, or a spaceman in a suit.It may just have the shape this girl believes in.

Spiritual guides aside, I think this spaceman was maybe hiding using some kind of device that made it so that we weren't not supposed to see him at all. He probably didn't expect that a camera would be able to see him.

Elizabeth Templeton

The “Cumberland Spaceman” or “Solway Firth Spaceman” is to me a very significant photograph. Much like the Cottingley Fairies, this photograph helped shape my interest in the paranormal and the pursuit of the truth. Unlike the Cottingley Fairies, the Solway Firth Spaceman photograph remains unexplained.

At first I was under the assumption that this was somehow a photograph of a spaceman doll. According to Jim Templeton, there was no such dolls or toys in the area. He did not see any obstructions or anyone else in the frame at the time of the picture, yet when the photographs were developed, it clearly shows a humanoid creature wearing what appears to be a space suit.
Many have claimed that this was just Elizabeth’s spaceman toy/doll that somehow was captured during the posed photograph. Others say that it’s just a complete hoax. Some accomplice dressed up in a very 1960s looking “space suit” and stood in the background. There’s even a video explaining how it could have been made:

The video above does explain the angle and distance of the “spaceman” but it does not explain who or what the spaceman is. So as far as debunking, it does not do the job.

Read the details on the case:
The Solway Firth Spaceman (also known as the Solway Spaceman and the Cumberland Spaceman) refers to a photograph taken in 1964 at Burgh Marsh, situated near Burgh by Sands and overlooking the Solway Firth in Cumbria, England. The image, which shows in the background a white figure in what the photographer Jim Templeton took for a space suit, remains unexplained. While it has been suggested by some that the figure is merely someone with their back to the camera, perhaps wearing a hat or helmet, Templeton insists that he did not see anyone present when the photograph was taken. The image has attracted interest from ufologists and has become a source of international fascination.
On 23 May 1964, Jim Templeton, a firefighter from Carlisle, Cumberland, (now part of Cumbria,) took three photographs of his five-year-old daughter while on a day trip to Burgh Marsh.] The only other people on the marshes that day were a couple of old ladies, and although cows and sheep would have normally been plentiful, they were huddled together at the far end of the marsh. In a letter to the Daily Mail in 2002, Templeton recalled, “I took three pictures of my daughter Elizabeth in a similar pose – and was shocked when the middle picture came back from Kodak displaying what looks like a spaceman in the background.” Templeton insists that he did not see the figure until after his photographs were developed, and analysts at Kodak confirmed that the photograph was genuine.

Aftermath
Templeton tells of a visit after the photograph was published by two men who, he says, claimed to be from Her Majesty’s Government, but refused to show their identification. He says that they referred to each other as numbers and asked him questions about the weather conditions on the day of the photograph and about the activities of local bird life. They drove Templeton to the marsh, where he says they tried to make him admit that he had in fact photographed a passer by — a suggestion that he strongly rejected. The men then became angry and drove away leaving him stranded on the marsh five miles from home.
Templeton spoke to the Daily Mail in December 2002. He said of the photograph: “I took the picture to the police in Carlisle who, after many doubts, examined it and stated there was nothing suspicious about it. The local newspaper, the Cumberland News, picked up the story and within hours it was all over the world. The picture is certainly not a fake, and I am as bemused as anyone else as to how this image appeared in the background. Over the four decades the photo has been in the public domain, I have had many thousands of letters from all over the world with various ideas or possibilities – most of which make little sense to me.” Templeton asserted that he had experienced no financial gain as a result of distributing the photograph, nor did he ever pursue it. In an interview recorded for BBC television, Templeton spoke candidly about the photograph, saying: “Who is he? Where’s he from? Those are the two questions we want answered.” The case was also covered in the BBC One series Secrets of the Paranormal, presented by Jenny Randles.
Australian connection
A Blue Streak launch at the Woomera Test Range, using Cumbrian-built weaponry, had been aborted because of two large men seen on the firing range. Technicians at the time did not know about Templeton’s sighting until it appeared on the front page of an Australian Newspaper, and they said that the figure in Cumbria looked the same as the ones they had seen on the monitor at Woomera. Templeton told the BBC that technicians considered the two figures to be “exactly the same type of man: same dress, same figure, same size” as in the original photograph.

So what was the Solway Firth Spaceman?

A simple error in photography? a hoax? or an alien visitor?

What I also find interesting is the report of the blue streak launch. Last I heard, the MOD was supposedly launched an investigation to these claims. But due to the department shutting down this year, is any of this information going to be released? or will the cases that have been in “cold” status remain that way?

Have any of you done any research on this case? The information online is vague and contradictory of itself.

I know I saw this picture before: in Black and White, about 35 or 40 years ago in a book or UFO paper I had. I found this information by searching the Internet for about 20 minutes.

This story is NOT THE SAME story listed on the first post!!!!!!!

Read both stories and compare the information.

The Solway Firth Photo, 1964 (Spaceman)

solwayfirth.jpg

On 24th May 1964, Jim Templeton, a fireman from Carlisle in the North of England, took his young daughter out to the marches overlooking the Solway Firth to take some photographs. Nothing untoward happened, although both he and his wife noticed an unusual aura in theatmosphere.

There was a kind of electric charge in the air, though no storm came. Even nearby cows seemed upset by it.

Some days later Mr Templeton got his photographs processed by the chemist, who said that it was a pity that the man who had walked past had spoilt the best shot of Elizabeth holding a bunch of flowers. Jim was puzzled. There had been nobody else on the marshes nearby at the time.

But sure enough, on the picture in question there was a figure in a silvery white space suit projecting at an odd angle into the air behind the girl's back, as if an unwanted snooper had wrecked the shot.

The case was reported to the police and taken up by Kodak, the film manufacturers, who offered free film for life to anyone who could solve the mystery when their experts failed.

It was not, as the police at first guessed, a simple double exposure with one negative accidentally printed on top of another during processing. It was, as Chief Superintendent Oldcorn quickly concluded, just "one of those things... a freak picture."

A few weeks later Jim Templeton received two mysterious visitors. He had never heard of MIBs: the subject was almost unknown in Britain then. But the two men who came to his house in a large Jaguar car wore dark suits and otherwise looked normal. The weird thing about them was their behavior.

They only referred to one another by numbers and asked the most unusual questions as they drove Jim out to the marshes. They wanted to know in minute detail about the weather on the day of the photograph, the activities of local bird life and odd asides like that.

Then they tried to make him admit that he had just photographed an ordinary man walking past. Jim responded politely, but nevertheless rejected their idea, at which they became irrationally angry and hustled themselves into the car, driving off and leaving him. The fire officer had to hike five miles across country to get home.

It might be interesting, but i`m reading "The answers from an alien from Andromeda galaxy" at the moment. You can search the net and find the full transcript. Long story short, this andromedan guy dubbed "Mythy'' answers different questions of an ordinary human.
So the earthling shows this notorious photo and asks "Mythy" to explain the origin of the spaceman`s image in the background.
Below is the alien`s explanation, sorry for terrible English but that`s the authentic language of this transcript ...
"You get some very interesting evidence with your cameras. Using this costume is
certainly a Pleiadeans. They have long been engaged in the control of military activities
on your planet and this costume is when they are in the field outside the spacecraft.
This costume reflects and absorbs light, normally go unnoticed, but the film should
have caught the frequencies adjacent to register his presence at the site. Today they
should have corrected this detail. I have no idea what he was doing at that location but
was really there. Probably the ship should be parked next to that place with the field of
invisibility on."
