Wall of Ice Surges Out of Lake, Crushes Homes - Strong winds drive freak ice wave to destroy 12 Manitoba houses

Strong winds drive freak ice wave to destroy 12 Manitoba houses

(Newser) – Winter isn't finished with Canada's western Manitoba yet: A state of emergency has been declared in a small community near Winnipeg after a 30-foot wall of ice surged off a lake onto the shore, destroying a dozen homes and damaging 15 more, the CBC reports. Amazingly, nobody was injured in the destruction, which happened in a matter of minutes as strong winds pushed huge amounts of built-up ice off Lake Dauphin.
Homeowners "heard it before they saw it (the ice) coming up their decks," a local official tells the Winnipeg Free Press. "Then it came right in their front windows. It was just a matter of minutes. Fortunately, no one was hurt. We were very lucky." The day after the ice wave, hundreds of local residents pitched in to help homeowners chip away the ice floes.
