What exactly is a "Spiritual Awakening"?

Figured I would ask here, it seems there's more info on what happens when you are awakening than what it actually is, from what I've found. (Although I'm not very thorough when looking for things..).
What exactly happens when you awaken? Is there any science behind it..? It's achieving a certain state of consciousness, right..?
Apologies if I'm coming off as maybe rude..? I believe many of you will know about this and be able to differentiate what you believe to be the facts and the fiction when it comes to this.
 
A very important subject.
Suffering is good for the soul?
It may instill empathy.
A spoiled child that was born with a silver spoon in his mouth may never achieve such feelings.

The only other way that I can think of is to lose a love one and see them suffer.
Nature vs. nurture may play a part in our ability to "See the Light".

If you read a book called: "The Culture of Narcissism" you may notice a correlation or connection to being raised in a single parent home and having little empathy for others.

This is why I have grave concern for the inner city kids growing up without a father around to give the child guidance and discipline.
