Cygnet or an ugly duckling is a young swan. Funny, they do not seem ugly to me. However, perhaps this is in reference to what they will one day become and it is an illustrative comparison. Still, I do wonder why we have the story of the "Ugly Duckling" by author Hans Christian Andersen, as young swans are cute and nice. I know it is suppose to be a cryptic metaphor for having a positive self image.
