iron i brought a peace once looked like steel and it didnt do good for an electromagnet best use plain mild steel bars not 1 inch diameter by 7 inches long make it 2 inches diameter by 11 long then make some spacers and space them apart so you have 7 inches to wind your coil on so you have some ends sticking out forget the crappy t bar section and use polyimide capton tape high temperature stuff between each layer of 21 awg wire

I wanna make sure I wind it right and know which way should face up so I don’t end up in the “negative dimensions”

I asked DoctorZ about the electromagnet, and here's what he told me:

6-inch steel bar, regular iron, there are twelve layers of winding, the bar is shaped like a T it takes between 800 and 1200 feet of 22 to 24 gauge transformer wire. Wind it clockwise, but it seriously doesn't matter.

Hope this helps!

i wish i had a picture of where to start winding on the core

Do you have some kind of winding jig? I had a metal lathe to use to wind mine. The iron core was 7" in mine. I started winding at 1/2 inch in and wound for 6" then back again to make one layer of 7 needed. Since I made mine I've found out that Gibbs put tape between each layer.

now you are making cense Einstein ( finely ) please tell me from where did you start winding from the front of the core or from the back ?
