We looked around and never before had we noticed that inside the church of Valle Benedetta the spirals are an integral part of the ornament and are represented in an almost obsessive way. Spirals of different shapes and materials are found in every corner of the church, wherever we look we see spirals, from small, almost insignificant ones, to large ones with an explicit meaning. Almost impossible to quantify the real number. Every time we look we see new ones. In reality no one has ever managed to establish the exact number of spirals present in the church, it would be a real challenge to attempt the census. For this reason the hermit also launched this challenge to the descendant of Captain Martelli, a challenge that the corporal managed to win thanks to the help of an important relic in his possession, recovered during the period in which he was employed in the Folgore in the birthplace of Leontino the Young. Quantifying the coils can be a challenge, but if we are transported by them we can even fight in those battlefields assigned by the hermit to play a long game of senet on his personal chessboard. It was precisely the spirals forged by the hermit that allowed Leale Martelli and her descendant to reach the pre-established battlefields through the maze of time. It was precisely from one of these spirals that the descendant of the captain managed to escape during the umpteenth battle to which the corporal remained very attached since fate would have it that he still wore the insignia of the valiant battalion many years later even in peacetime. It was from a black spiral formed in the desert skies that the corporal abandoned the battlefield thanks to a ruse by Captain Leale Martelli. In fact, in the list of veterans of the battle of El Alamein there is only the surname Martelli, without the name and this for a very specific reason that for now it is not appropriate to reveal.
Perhaps one of these spirals is the one sighted by the heroic second lieutenant Vincenzo Formica in October 1942 at El Alamein when he saw planes that were shot down and formed dense spirals of smoke. Spirals and falling planes seem to be associated with the romiton in every era, but we now partially know why certain plane crashes are attributed to the romiton, or instead certain plane crashes could be used whenever one wanted to return from a time shift ...
