Details remain in flux, the people said, but the project will start with 180 small, high-capacity satellites orbiting the earth at lower altitudes than traditional satellites, and then could expand.

Google's satellite venture is led by Greg Wyler, founder of satellite-communications startup O3b Networks Ltd., who recently joined Google with O3b's former chief technology officer, the people said. Google has also been hiring engineers from satellite company Space Systems/Loral LLC to work on the project, according to another person familiar with the hiring initiative.

That would make Internet a true global network available in 100% of the civilized areas all across the world.

I bet the government is involved. The more people you get online, the more data you can collect about them. :)
On a brighter note, you would think it would help end paper work if everyone could go digital. The problem is, some cannot afford it.

...and what else will these satellites be used for?
What's screwy about the whole 'sat internet' is that the uploads are limited to having a phone line... it would be like satphone-internet, which would be horribly slow. Honestly, I can't think of anyone actually wanting it. I suppose 3rd world people would think some internet is better than no internet, but, if we look at the big picture, how would google monetize such a slow internet? What are they going to sell to people in the middle of the desert? So, yeah, what else are these satellites going to be used for...

True, and weather affects the connection greatly.

Google has driver less cars now. The future is more exciting than we can even imagine. For example, this is what the car of the future looked like in the 50's. Yeah, it looks old now.
