Heck, in the long run it really doesn't matter if we eat MAd Cow or not. I think if we break down into people wanting to eat "river rats" (like in Freejack) then we have become constrained to the biological and genetic experiments of "The Man" and will in no doubt become unwilling specimens in a growing curiosity of genetic enhancement. (IMO) Eat the cow or the rat, chicken and cat taste the same.

Last year I could buy a one pound Porterhouse Steak for $5.99. This year I can buy the exact same Porterhouse Steak for $9.99 ~ thanks to the Atkins diet...

...add Mad Cow to the mix and who knows what we'll be paying. probably $19.99.

WILL THE INSANITY EVER END

The guy that prepared them certainly thought they were tasty. I guess you had to be hungry. Still, you would be very surprised what Tobasco can do for protien. You just have to keep it still while you pour the Tobasco on it. And you would be very surprised to learn what you can eat and still survive. Why, take McDonalds for instance.....

It's much the same theory of smashing your thumb to make the pain from somewhere else go away.

Hey Darkwolf, do you remember "Mystery Meat"???

We always understood USDA to mean "they" / US did it again" to us.
Personnaly, I always felt the Cooks had the most thankless MOS of any slot in the military. Of course, you always wanted to make friends with the quartermaster and disbursements but if the cook was ticked off at you, life was truly hell.

Titor said that he was really scared by the food we scarfed down, but here's a guy living in a postnuke swamp heating up the glowing worms on a handcrank generator and swilling coffee that percolates on its own without heat.

Cup o' frozen sludge & a doubledouble greasecheese in a styrofoam box. Mmmm.

US tries to prevent panic over BSE scare
By David Usborne

20 November 2004

Consumer groups and the beef industry in the United States were yesterday attempting to avert any public panic over food supplies after officials at the Department of Agriculture revealed on Thursday that they had uncovered a possible case of BSE.

The government admitted that preliminary screening for the disease, which can be transmitted in a usually fatal form to humans, had proved positive on one animal. It insisted the results were considered "inconclusive" pending further tests.

The results may not be ready for several days and in the meantime the country's $40bn- a-year (?21bn) beef industry can only wait anxiously. The news sent beef prices tumbling and cast an instant chill on the main fast-food chains' share prices. While some experts warned it was likely the second round of tests would confirm the presence of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) officials at the Department of Agriculture were more sanguine.

While refusing to reveal where the animal had been found, Andrea Morgan, associate deputy administrator of the department's inspectors, said the agency "remains confident in the safety of the US beef supply".

When the US found its first confirmed case of the disease in an imported cow last year, scores of countries, including Japan and Taiwan, banned imports of American beef. The bans have only recently been lifted. Exports account for about $3.8bn every year. Even more disastrous than a loss of international trade, however, would be a turn against beef by US consumers.

Texas Woman's Death Probed for Mad Cow Tie

Sun Nov 21, 6:06 PM ET

BEAUMONT, Texas - The family of a Beaumont woman is waiting for test results to find out if she died from a form of an affliction connected to mad cow disease.

Burnell Baize, 71, died Oct. 16 of the rare Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (news - web sites), which eats holes in the brain and always causes death, the Beaumont Enterprise reported Sunday.

There are two forms of the disease.

One type is called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and is linked to mad cow disease. It can be contracted by humans if they eat infected beef or nerve tissue, and possibly through blood transfusions.

The more common type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, known as classic CJD, is responsible for about one in 10,000 U.S. deaths each year, and its cause is unknown 85 percent of the time.

Baize's family is wondering if she ate infected beef.

In the United States, there has been only one known case of variant CJD ? a Florida woman who died in June after eating contaminated beef more than a decade ago in England.

The only confirmed U.S. case of mad cow disease was found last December in Washington state.

But on Thursday, Agriculture Department officials said a second case of mad-cow disease might have turned up.

Baize's family is worried.

"This is a scary, scary malady," said her son Gene Barnes, 53.

Baize began to suffer from dementia during the late summer, he said. In the last week of her life, she was in a coma.

Her brain was taken to the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center in Ohio, where an autopsy will determine if she died of classic or variant CJD. The results are expected in about two weeks.

This year so far, two Texans have died of classic CJD, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

In the last eight years, there have been between one and 10 people to die of the illness each year, said spokesman Doug McBride.

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of mad cow disease, so far has killed 100 people in Britain and elsewhere.

Both forms of CJD are believed to involve the unexplained mutation of proteins in the brain called prions.

Mad cow disease ? known also as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE (news - web sites) ? eats holes in the brains of cattle. It sprang up in Britain in 1986 and spread through countries in Europe and Asia, prompting massive destruction of herds and decimating the European beef industry.
