"Punxsutawney Phil" The Legendary Groundhog's Origin

This was recently brought up in a conversation with someone outside the US.

It's still a tradition here in the states to hear his predictions for the arrival of Spring.

I openly admit to having very little in knowledge of our most renowned groundhog,
I liked the Bill Murray movie, though.

Does anyone have any input on this subject?
