He's an urban legend, but it was solved and the hoaxer identified. It has opened up a whole world of fantasy, though, and a few lunatics as well.
 
I would like to offer commentary on the technical questions and Andrew Basago's , legitimacy, as I have spoken to hm personally. First I am Marlin Pohlman inventor of Patent Application US20060073976A1 an application that was never granted. I have spoke to Andrew and I believe he is a traveller stranded from a parallel timeline, he sufers from medical conditions that can only be explained by incompatabilitabilities between his native time line and his current time line, also his memory and relationships differ on small key points which point to critical divergances. This is consistent with the Everett interpretation put forward by "Titor" (FYI: I am not Titor, I have spoken to Pamela over the phone and she can verify I am NOT Titor ) also the VGL will "never" be 100% accurate so divergances are bound to occur and hopefully the Protein and Carbohydrate sequences of the new timeline will be compatable with your native metabolism. That is an unforseen danger that we can thank Basago for discovering, to his personal detriment. My understanding and experimentation with the HDR is that it is a torsion based Radionics device. Anyone wishing to understand this method of temporal manipulation should research two names. the astronomer Nikolai Aleksandrovich Kozyreva and the late Claude Swanson Ph.D. both have works that will lead you to works by J.G Gallimore, Konstantin Meyl and others. The mechanics are Muons masquerading as electrons in circuits and Einstein-Cartan Torsion/Spinors, Space-Time Crystal and Space-Time Group (Shenglong Xu and Congjun Wu) and applied Green's Functions and Poynting vector and Rindler flux under time inversion. If you think of the circuits as EMF driven Muon circuits that decay into R & L torsion/spin elements and apply Kozyrev and His Theory of Time the HDR function will begin to make sense and its limitations will become obvious. Basago's description of his fathers technology (Bismuth crystal based which is also related to spin/trsion inversion) is also consistent with this theory ( I suggest The Everettian Conformal Bootstrap by Maya Benowitz )

It can also refer to a device with desirable engineering properties that are difficult or impossible to achieve.

He said my math could be correct, forward and backward ( we went over it three times) but without captured charged micro singularities to craft the device the USPTO would never consider granting such a patent. I am glad he chose to word the rejection letter better.

So it was rejected due to its physical design, the components were unobtainable in 2004-07? That was a long time ago. Material science has advanced since then.ah the singularities
