The only lead was that he would pass on all of his research to his son.

Unless he was cremated after a life well lived he urned it.You can kind of look at that as a positive though, if his son hasn't published or put any of it out he may still be with us if you want to stay on the optimistic side of things.
I am going to get little morbid here so i apologize in advance - has anyone considered looking up Cemetery records? Most Cemetery's hold records of everyone buried there, it is possible he had a small service so or it wasn't reported to the obituary's. But if he did pass and was buried the cemetery would have records.
You may be able to search by name and birthdate which could really narrow it down
