Do you think they'll ever turn this into an app? I kind of like how it is now, one word a day, the same word for everyone. Sometimes keeping it simple is best.

If you're on Android and using Chrome, you can install the page on your homescreen. That action should be available in the ... Menu, top right. From there, it works just like an app.

I like how it's a daily thing that lasts a couple minutes too. You don't get burned out after 3 days, playing for hours.

Wordle is free for now, but there's a pretty good chance you'll soon be paying for it

The lone creator of the word puzzle phenomenon has cashed out, promising his creation will stay free. Its new buyer has other ideas.

The New York Times has acquired Wordle, a website-only word game that has seen a recent burst in popularity, for an undisclosed price "in the low seven figures".

Its creator, former Reddit software engineer Josh Wardle, says the game will "be free to play for everyone" when it moves home.

However, the NYT statement, armed with a careful caveat, was a little less convincing.

Wordle will “initially remain free to new and existing players”, the company says.

“As part of our portfolio of games, Wordle will have an exciting future with the help of a team of talented engineers, designers, editors and more, furthering the user experience.”
